Bolton Community Tax Clinic

If you are self-employed, a landlord, or have income that is not taxed through PAYE, you will usually need to complete a self-assessment tax return each year. The deadlines are fixed, and missing them can mean penalties – even if you have no tax to pay. Here is a plain-English guide to the dates that matter.

The key dates

  • 6 April to 5 April – the UK tax year your return covers.
  • 5 October – the deadline to register for self-assessment if you need to file for the first time for the tax year that ended on 5 April.
  • 31 October – the deadline for paper returns.
  • 31 January – the deadline for online returns, and for paying any tax you owe for the previous tax year.
  • 31 July – the date your second “payment on account” is due, if you make them.

What if I miss the deadline?

If your return is late, HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty, even if you owe no tax. After three months, extra daily penalties can be added, with further penalties at six and twelve months. Interest is also charged on any tax paid late. If you had a genuine reason for missing the deadline, such as serious illness, you may be able to appeal – so it is always worth getting advice.

Making Tax Digital is starting

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software, with the threshold due to fall to £30,000 from April 2027. If you think this might apply to you, ask us at the clinic and we will help you understand what it means.

Getting it done without the stress

Many people put off their tax return because it feels overwhelming. Our volunteer advisers can sit with you, explain each section and help you file correctly and on time. Bring any HMRC letters, your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) if you have one, and records of your income and expenses.
